Meet Samantha

If you have a special needs child, you know what it feels like to be left out or left hanging. 

 

As an exhausted mother of an autistic child who divided her time between building teams of business leaders at work and caring for the needs of her child, there was no time for anything else. Help for us was scarce. Family was scattered. On-call much of the time, for me work never completely stopped.  I talked with my regional center for some respite care hours, but explained to them that I didn't have a respite care worker available - I needed help finding one.  I was given a few names and told to call back when I had a care-worker that could be used.  Nobody on the list was available.  I let it go and trudged on.

 

Fast-forward a few years, I've grown and my situation has changed, but there's still a need.  A new neighborhood brings new friends, and one of these friends also has a child similar to mine.  They had daily respite hours using a local agency to provide workers.  I called the regional center, referencing the specific agency and was immediately approved for respite hours, with a care provider provided.
